Red Bull Storm Chase 2012 - Teaser - Windsurf

From: quattro media

3 massive storms beyond wind force 10, tough duels man vs. man vs. nature, and the entire planet as a stage: Red Bull Storm Chase 2012 gives 10 of the world's best windsurfers the ride of their lives. The most challenging windsurfing contest of all time is set to find the champion in storm surfing. Anybody is invited to suggest favourite competition grounds on www.redbullstormchase.com. Amateurs and pros alike can also register to take part -- if they dare. In July, the community votes the 10 finalists for this fierce challenge against the elements. And from August to November, the global hunt for the storms is on. The contest format of Red Bull Storm Chase is simple: 10 riders will compete in the first mission. 6 advance to the second mission. In the final mission, the top 4 riders will battle for victory. To guarantee raging conditions, Red Bull Storm Chase 2012 will be mobile to the max, with a 4-month holding period and just 48 hours to mobilise riders and global contest crew on-site before the storm strikes. The starting flag will drop as soon as the wind exceeds 10 Beaufort (54 knots / 100 kmh / 62 mph). Red Bull Media House

Street League 2012: Nyjah Huston Wins Kansas City... Again

The 2012 Street League season kicked off in Kansas City this past weekend as it did last year-- with skateboard technician Nyjah Huston taking home $150,000. Huston's ability to land difficult and technical tricks consistently makes him almost unbeatable in the current Street League format.

"It was a hard one tonight, that's for sure!" said Nyjah. "I definitely had to work for it. I love the challenge, though, and to skate with these guys is great."

Street League rookie Bastien Salabanzi provided some much needed excitement on the big section, giving Huston a run for his money. But in the end Salabanzi was unable to land the tricks when it counted most.

Now in its third season, Street League's instant scoring allowed for the possibility of pressure-packed moments, but very few times did the skateboarders deliver. Big names like Sean Malto, Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole, and Paul Rodriguez had their opportunities but were unable to land tricks with consistency.

Improvements to the format, broadcast, and scoring of Street League raised the spectator experience of skateboarding to an all-time high. However, Street league was created with the hope of appealing to more than just skateboard fans. It was designed to reach a household audience including some who have never set foot on a skateboard. Does this competitive format, which is modeled after team sports appeal to the mainstream? Most likely not.

Unfortunately, there's no way to appreciate and understand just how impressive the level of skateboarding is unless you actually skate. Even high quality cameras in slow motion don't convey the level of difficulty.

In the meantime, skateboarders can appreciate Street League for what it is-- amazing skateboarding from today's best street skaters. Nyjah Huston also took home the Monster Energy Best Trick Award worth $15,000 for his Big Spin Frontside Hurricane Grind.

Complete Results.
1. Nyjah Huston 51.5
2. Bastien Salabanzi 47.8
3. Chaz Ortiz 44.2
4. Paul Rodriguez 42.5
5. Chris Cole 39.8
6. Ryan Sheckler 29.7
7. Sean Malto 14.6

Kilian Martin's Altered Route

Spanish skater Kilian Martin refers to his style of skateboarding as "art on wheels" and it's tough to argue when he's releasing videos like the clip below, Altered Route, filmed by Brett Novak. Kilian has followed in the path laid out by freestyle pioneer Rodney Mullen, mixing incredibly inventive, unique, and technical tricks with obstacles and flow you'd find in street skating. This clip features some of Kilian's latest work, set in the eerie backdrop of an abondoned waterpark near Palm Springs. Enjoy.

Austrian Skateboarder Transforms Hunting Lodge into Skatepark

What Austrian skateboarders lack in having a variety of spots to choose from they make up for in creativity. With the help of some well placed concrete, Austrian born pro skateboarder Philipp Schuster transformed a luxurious hunting lodge into a unique skate park.

Schuster explained that, as he sees it, creating a skate spot is possible anywhere: "The main thing is to use your imagination. If you do that then there is no limit to the number of cool places to skate."

Penny Skateboards, a new company out of Australia, has been gaining momentum with their retro replica skates. Modeled after the original 'sidewalk surfer' style of skates from the 50's, which would eventually spawn skateboarding as we know it today, their skates feature bright plastic decks and skinny trucks, along with some modern upgrades.

Mark Gonzales Leads 2012 Inductees into Skateboarding Hall of Fame

The third annual Skateboarding Hall of Fame Inductions took place on May 10 in Orange County at the 2012 IASC Skateboarding Summit. And this year one of skateboarding's most unique personalities was inducted.

Mark "the Gonz" Gonzales, a true pioneer of street skating was recognized for his fearless attitude and unique style, which shaped the sport throughout the 80's and 90's. Not only did Gonz contribute his efforts on a skateboard, he also gained fame in the industry with his artistic vision. For instance, no one will forget when he fooled around at the Eiffel Tower on the infamous circle board.

The next challenge for Gonz will be designing his display for the Hall of Fame at the Skatelab in Simi Valley. A skateboarder and off the wall artist like Gonz should have no trouble creating something interesting.

Gonzales was inducted alongside original Z-boy Jay Adams, Peggy Oki who was the only female Z-boy, and legendary skate photographer Danny Bearer.

The new class of inductees joins a long list of legends including Tony Hawk, Stacy Peralta, Steve Caballero, Danny Way, Eric Koston, and Bob Burnquist to name a few.

Here's a look back at the Gonz's infamous skate clip with Coconut Records for their song, "West Coast." The clip embodies the weird brilliance that is Mark Gonzales.

The Pro Freeboard Team gets after it in April of 2012 on the streets of San Francisco. That's why for the last 15 years we've been making skateboards that give riders the control of a snowboard on the pavement. Two low-riding center wheels let riders drift and spin while four edge wheels allow them to control their slides and stop on a dime. Combined with the strength and responsiveness of their bamboo and maple decks, and their fully adjustable step-in/step-out bindings, Freebords come with everything a rider needs to skate like a snowboarder all year round -- no snow required.--Nick Cruit

Mike Vallely Celebrates 25 Years of Skateboarding and Elephant Launch

Celebrating his 25th year as a professional skateboarder Mike Vallely threw an all out party on Catalina Island this past Saturday, launching his own skateboard company.

The notorious bad boy of skateboarding parted ways with long-time partner Powell-Peralta in December to launch Elephant Skateboards. "This brand is not framed by someone else's idea of cool, or what they think skateboarding is from moment to moment. It's a brand that simply represents what I have always represented: 100% skateboarding for love," Vallely stated when he announced he was starting his own brand.

Vallely hooked up with artist Tim Clark to create the look and feel behind the brand as well as the entire first product line. The skateboards feature designs from his past, present, and what he hopes to ride in the future.

Vallely explained the special meaning behind the name of his new brand, stating, "The Elephant symbolizes both love and strength. These qualities feed each other and make for a complete and meaningful life. But also, they represent my approach to skateboarding and how I view skateboarding. Elephant represents my passion for and my approach to skateboarding."

Those lucky enough to escape LA for the day were treated to a mini-ramp jam session during the day and a special musical jam session from Ben Harper in the evening. Here's a photo recap from Saturday:
Not a bad turn out considering the jam session was on Catalina Island.

Freebord Team Shreds San Fran 2012

Freebord Team Shreds San Fran 2012

From: Heather Hendricks

The Pro Freeboard Team gets after it in April of 2012 on the streets of San Francisco. Featured Riders: Mike Hoppe, Corey Lucero, Caleb Casey, Bently Anderson Freebord was founded on the desire to snowboard all year, wherever and whenever wanted.

X Games Adds Three Cities in 2013

X Games' formal quest for global domination is now underway. Okay, maybe they don't want to take over the world, but their plans for expanding X Games to three more cities across the globe were announced today. Starting in 2013, X Games will be expanding to six events. Joining Los Angeles, Aspen, and Tignes will be Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, Barcelona, Spain, and Munich, Germany.

X Games organizers conducted an intense bidding process, ultimately selecting the three new cities, for a total of two winter events (Aspen and Tignes) and four summer events (Los Angeles, Foz do Iguacu, Barcelona, and Munich).

John Skipper, President of ESPN, commented, "We are bringing significant focus to this expansion because we believe in the universal appeal of these sports and competitors and want to share the X Games experience with fans around the world."

The biggest surprise from the announcement may actually be which city was not chosen. Whistler, though rumored by many to be a prime destination for Winter X Games, was not added to the lineup. Mixed reactions from some of the winter athletes have begun pouring in on Twitter:

Kelly Clark:
Whistler was the rumor. Turns out it's not happening yet, but maybe in the future.

Mike Riddle
Bummed that @xgames didn't add another winter stop at @WhistlerBlckcmb #GlobalXGames

Spencer O'Brien
Bummed @XGames expanded summer and not winter. Come on guys!

Roz Groenewoud: Very surprised #GlobalXgames isn't expanding to @WhistlerBlckcmb in 2013. Canadian X-Games would have been awesome but I still love @wssf!

Click here for details about the new host cities and more reactions on the expansion.

X Games 2013 Schedule
Jan. 24-27: Aspen, Colo.
March 20-22: Tignes, France
April 18-21: Foz do Iguacu, Brazil
May 9-12: Barcelona, Spain
June 27-30: Munich, Germany
Aug. 1-4: Los Angeles

Los Angeles City Council Proposes Speed Limit for Skateboarders

It's no secret that skateboarders and law enforcement don't exactly see eye-to-eye. Skaters often feel singled out by the authorities, and recent news from the Los Angeles City Council meeting may reinforce that outlook.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to seek a speed limit for skateboarders and penalize them for failing to follow a range of traffic rules, from stopping at stop signs to yielding to pedestrians."

To be fair, these rules were proposed in response to the death of two skateboarders in the past year. The city council is hoping to bring a stop to "bombing" hills, the term skaters use for going downhill at high speeds, by enforcing a speed limit of 25-mph.

If Councilman Joe Buscaino has his way, skateboarders will be facing penalties such as harsh fines, traffic citations, and even the impounding of their skateboards.

"We're looking at having the officers impound the skateboards after the citation is given so that the parents can go to the police station and recover the skateboard," Buscaino said.

As you can imagine, the skateboard community is left feeling singled out, as there is no enforced speed limit for cyclists in Los Angeles. Skate shop owner Mike Horelick voiced his doubts about the enforced speed limit, stating, "Skateboarders can't tell exactly how fast they're going. If you're driving, you look at the speedometer. But if you're a skateboarder, you're looking at the road in front of you."

Inspirational Skateboarder Oscar Loreto Jr. Featured in Rise Above

We can all learn a lesson about perseverance and determination from 25-year-old skateboarder Oscar Loreto Jr. He was born with a congenital birth defect and as a result he is without a left foot, left hand, and four fingers on his right hand.

Oscar speaks openly about his mindset and challenges when skateboarding, "Throughout my whole life, whatever negative thought I had, I've always tried to convert it and make it a positive to motivate me...I think I've learned tricks as every other skater but there's definitely some minor tweaks I have to do because of the prosthetic."

Oscar's journey into skateboarding is documented in Rise Above, an inspiring new series on the RIDEChannel, showcasing athletes in action sports who have overcome major setbacks including disabilities, addictions, and more to persevere in life.

Boo Johnson Joins Mountain Dew Skateboarding

Boo Johnson from the little California mountain town of Tehachapi signed a deal to join the Mountain Dew skateboarding team. Johnson joins an impressive roster including Paul Rodriguez, Theotis Beasley, and Keelan Dadd.

To celebrate, the Dew crew put together a short "Welcome to the Team" edit featuring kind words about the skater from his new teammates. The footage features Boo Johnson skating P-Rod's private training facility.

Fortunately, now that Johnson is on the Mountain Dew skate team, we can look forward to seeing him compete at this year's Dew Tour Stops in Ocean City and San Francisco.
