X Games rookie Raven Tershy Wins Skateboard Park

Santa Cruz native Raven Tershy made the most of his first appearance at X Games when he bettered the score of last years park champion Pedro Barros to win X Games Gold.

After qualifying fourth in the elimination round, Tershy gained momentum in round one finishing as the top qualifier going into the finals against Ben Hatchell, Kevin Kowalski, Omar Hassan and Barros.

After 3 runs in the finals Barros appeared to have the win locked up with a combined score of 81 points. He was throwing down 540's all over the place; stalefish 540's, melon 540's, and indy nosebone 540's.

In Tershy's second to last run, he put together the perfect line combining massive transfers with technical tight lines. The crowd went nuts when he earned a 44 out of 50 which was enough to get the score to edge out Barros 82-81 for the X Games Gold.

"I'm stoked. I wasn't expecting this," Tershy said. "It was a great time."

On his last run having no idea he already had the highest score Tershy took a hard fall as he went for broke right before the buzzer for what he thought was his last chance to beat Barros. He stayed down for a few minutes but quickly felt better when he learned he just won the comp.

Raven Tershy realizes he the X Games 17 Skateboard Park Champ

The bright lights and cameras never seemed to bother Tershy as he ripped the coarse apart all contest. He has quietly made a name for himself on the bowl circuit with a win in June at the 2011 Copenhagen Pro Bowl Jam and now with his X Games Gold.

Top Qualifier from the elimination round Ben Hatchell completed his successful X Games campaign with a third place finish.

Super Grom Curren Caples was forced to withdraw from competition before it even started as he took a massive fall during practice sustaining a concussion.

Things you don't usually see

I recently read a surfing book that had some pictures of "wormholes" behind a wave that had been taken on a reef in Tahiti. I'd also seen a shot a while ago that Bluesnapper had taken at a northern beach which had these same things adorning the back of the wave.

I was surprised to see the same thing in some photos I took last weekend.

How do they form? Are they full of negative ions? Are they more common than I think they may be?

Anyway, whatever the answer, I like them. They are something I rarely see.

5 Tips for Chosen Crews: EDITING part 2

Whether you're crafting the perfect sponsor-me video, making your first independent surf film, or dropping a creative crew edit in Nike's Chosen contest, editing skills are a must. But you don't have to be an expert; start with these tips from a real pro, San Clemente's Chris Steblay. Chris is the creative force behind the "Noticed" Neck Rash crew in Chosen, as well as a professional surf filmmaker for a laundry list of clients. Last week he gave tips on how to film surf action; today he brings you wisdom from the editing suite.

"Just like shooting, editing is an art form," says Chris. "It takes time and practice to get it down. With applications always changing and new software coming out monthly, it's not just about how well you can edit but also how well you stay on top of new developments. Sometimes you have to geek out a little bit and learn new ways to approach old things. Editing can overwhelm you when you're new to it, and people tend to over-amp and try to overdo it. Here are some tips to make the most of your time behind the computer and maximize the impact of your cut."

Chris's 5 tips on good editing:

1. Start small. If you're learning, don't jump right into the big leagues with Final Cut Pro. The program takes years to learn and will make your head explode if you are on a deadline. There are tons of entry-level programs that will help you get the basics of how video editing works. Then, when you're ready, step up and get a pro-level application. They are amazing, and once you know how to use them they'll treat you right.

2. Log your footage! There's nothing worse than getting asked for a clip years after you shot it and not being able to find it. The trick is to use keywords that will help you organize and find footage. Everyone has their own method of how they like to label clips, so play around and find one that works for you and your workflow.

3. Pick good music. Music is hard sometimes, especially if you have to work with a small selection of licensed tracks. The biggest trick is to not be too picky and choose stuff most people will like -- not just you and your friends. You might think Weird Al Yankovic is hot stuff, but most people won't sit through the video if they're over the song.

4. Easy on the effects. Film burns, jump cuts, and transitions -- they're all good stuff, but only in moderation. People tend to overdo it and get too hung up thinking the effects will make their video look better, but that's not always true. Less is more.

5.Trash the weak clips. Sometime guys get hung up on certain clips for any number of reasons. The fact is that if it sucks for any reason, you might not want it in your edit. It takes time and experience to figure out how to trim down, but it's all about coming across to your viewer at 100%. If you're struggling to fill three minutes, maybe chop it down to two and keep only the best stuff.

How Chaz Ortiz finds his edge

At 16, pro skateboarder Chaz Ortiz seems to have already figured out one of life's important lessons "Noting worth doing is easy."

Gatorade and ESPN have partnered to produce a series of segments called "Inside The Edge," airing now through August on the Sunday 11 PM ET edition of SportsCenter.

This week it's Ortiz's turn to show his daily balancing act of school, skating, working out and oh yah being a normal teenager.

This is a far cry from the early days of skateboarding when skaters ditched class so they can skate and dehydrated themselves way more than they hydrated with sport drinks like Gatorade, plus the only workout they got was while skating or doing the classic 12oz curl.

Maybe this is a direct correlation for why these young kids are progressing the sport faster than ever.

Congratulations Carissa Moore: 2011 ASP Womens World Tour Champion

History was made today in Biarritz, France as Carissa Moore became the youngest ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women's World Champion at a mere 18-years old. The Oahu, Hawaii native added two other records to her already outstanding young career. Moore celebrated the first world title for a Hawaiian in 30 years, since Margo Oberg's crowning in 1981. Additionally, Moore clinched the championship with one event still left to go on the world tour, and has made it to the finals in all six events thus far this season, another first in ASP history. Nyjah Huston wins third straight Street League in dominating fashion

Chalk up another victory and another $150,000 for Nyjah Huston. No dreads, no problem as Nyjah continued to dominate the competition at the third stop of the 2011 Street League tour.

There was talk that Nyjah might have lost his super powers when he decided to cut off his dreadlocks, but apparently that's not the case. He linked together big tricks with technical tricks landing 92% of his attempts. With that type of consistency Nyjah was unbeatable in the trick by trick format.

With his third victory in a row, Nyjah's total raised to $465,000 so far this year at Street league. Understandablya fan of the contest after his victory Nyjah told Rob Dyrdek in a post contest interview , "I all have to say is I love Street League, Thank you for inventing it."

Ryan Sheckler battled Nyjah to the end but down 3 points with 3 attempts left, Sheckler decided to go big instead of playing it safe which ended up being the difference. Sheckler fell on the attempts that counted most while Nyjah played it safe earning valuable points.

Chris Cole finally made his presence felt but in the end struggled to stomp his tricks landing only 67% of the time. Cole didn't go home empty handed, he won the Monster Energy Best Trick with a 360 flip

50/50 grind earning himself $15,000.
