TTR Billabong Flaunt It Finals - Sierra-at-Tahoe

The Billabong Flaunt It all-girls slopestyle and rail jam contest made its last and final stop of the series at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, CA. The 2011 Flaunt It contest series hit resorts across North America, and girls showed up to the Finals from around the globe. Fresh powder dumped in the days leading up to the event but the sun finally came out for an epic day of female shred domination in the 4Star TTR competition.  The level of riding at this year’s Finals blew the judges and locals away, which included the winners from the previous six (6) Flaunt It events who had all been flown out as part of their first place prizing.  All the girls put it on the line run after run for this last contest of the series.  The Sierra-at-Tahoe park crew worked hard to create the perfect setup, while Billabong’s Jamie Anderson was on-hand to award the girls for their efforts.The ladies threw down very technical tricks on the signature slopestyle course and urban-inspired rail jam in the Aspen’s Park.  In the end, it was Isabelle Lalive from Breckenridge, Colorado who took home $5,000 for first place with her phenomenal run consisting of a boardslide to fakie on the handrail, to switch backside 180, and finishing it off with a frontside 720.  The Dakine Best trick belonged to Tahoe local Nicki Slechta with her backside 720 on the second jump.  After a delicious lunch on the Tiki Deck hosted by Sierra, the competitors warmed up for the afternoon rail jam where they flaunted their skills on two street rail features.  The rail jam was unbelievable with the most technical tricks being thrown down back to back.  Kasandra Dolan took the lead with her front hardway 270 to 270 out on the 40-foot down bar rail, also rewarding her with the Sony Style Award.  Billabong’s Brooke Voigt placed 3rd in both the slopestyle and the rail jam, with her 50-50 to boardslide pretzel out on the round down flat down rail.

In addition to the title of Lord and $20,000 prize money, Brent also gets to bring home the treasured Highland sword. It was a close fought final in clean 4-foot conditions at Thurso East and despite a wave on the whistle, New Zealander Jay Quinn had to settle for second place at this 6 Star ASP Event. This second stop on the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Series 2011 was almost an all-kiwi final after Jay beat Alain Riou (PYF). However Brent pulled out a 9.0 and a 9.5 in the semi final to leave Richard Christie (NZL) unable to fight back, providing an Anzac final instead. Whilst last year's O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland was held in a freezing cold snowstorm, this year the competition wrapped up on a stunning sunny Sunday evening as competitors watched the action, laying in the sun on the cliff above the reef. 2011 has been one of the most spectacular years for the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland. The mobile event had no need to explore further than the world-class wave of Thurso East much to the delight of all the surfers who made the journey up to this remote part of the world.

Things you don't usually see

I recently read a surfing book that had some pictures of "wormholes" behind a wave that had been taken on a reef in Tahiti. I'd also seen a shot a while ago that Bluesnapper had taken at a northern beach which had these same things adorning the back of the wave.

I was surprised to see the same thing in some photos I took last weekend.

How do they form? Are they full of negative ions? Are they more common than I think they may be?

Anyway, whatever the answer, I like them. They are something I rarely see.

A.Skate Foundation Weekend

What a great weekend to celebrate World Autism Awareness day on April 2nd. It all started Saturday morning in Lake Forest at the Etnies skatepark where Etnies was hosting an Autism Speaks/ A.Skate Foundation clinic which allows children with autism to be a part of our social world through skateboarding. With the help of many dedicated volunteers including many Etnies team riders and Sole Technology employees, the clinic went off without a hitch and many children walked away smiling after an afternoon of skating. After the event, everyone headed up to Venice Beach for the "1 in 91″ Silent Auction Art Benefit hosted by Upper Class Label and sponsored by Skateboarder Magazine to help raise funds for the A.Skate Foundation to put on more clinics. The turn out was huge and everyone had a great time all the while knowing that all of the money that went towards bidding and winning the artwork would go directly to A.Skate to help further their cause.

Then on Sunday, the good people at Girl Skateboards made it possible for A.Skate and Skateboarder Magazine to hold another clinic at their private skatepark and it was another packed house. From 11 am to 2 pm, the park was packed with kids skating and parents taking pictures. Many pro skaters like Kenny Anderson, James Hardy, Ben Gilley, Chad Bartie and a large chunk of the Blueprint team came out to show support and get their first hands-on experience with helping autistic children learn to skate. It was so great to see so many pro skaters and companies show their support and it was just an amazing weekend and I was proud to be a part of such an inspirational cause. Thanks to Crys Worley, Peter Karvonen, Ashton Maxfield, Don Brown, Rick Howard, Jason Callaway and to everybody who help make this weekend possible. The A.Skate Foundation still needs all the support it can get, so please contact them to find out how you can help. Fish outta water

Southern California is a pretty unique place. Yes there's traffic, Yes its shallow, Yes there are assholes everywhere, but when you can take a step back, you must admit it's pretty cool. Not too many places can you surf good waves, find an empty skatepark, and shoot up to the mountain to ride, all in the same day. Rusty assembled a trio of pros from each sport to do some ultimate boarding. Josh Kerr, Joey Brezinski, and Romain De Marchi give it a go. In case you were wondering, Joey Brezinski (pro skater, pictured here on the right) really sucks at surfing.

This year's CWC Scotland enjoyed an amazing run of surf, with more tube rides in one day at Thurso than the competitors will likely see for the rest of the WQS season. The final was held in the dying stages of the swell, with lulls and a restart making it a bit anti-climactic. Especially after stellar quarter and semi-final heats.
