VANS European Downtown Showdown Hamburg 2010 - Element

VANS European Downtown Showdown Hamburg 2010 - Element

From: quattro media

Vans brought to life the creative concepts of four of the earlier selected skateboard brands and their idea for the ultimate obstacle - each inspired by Hamburg's naughty and nautical past and present. The designs by Clich , Element Europe, Death Skateboards and Antiz were realised by famous ramp builder Andreas "Sch tzi" Sch tzenberger of IOU Ramps and installed on the Reeperbahn to be skated for one day only. Team Element consists of Alexandre Dereon (FRA), Guillaume Mocquin (FRA), Phil Zwijsen (BEL), Mickael Mackrodt (GER) and Ross McGouran (GBR). For Team Manager Alexandre Dereon it was important that the obstacle is related to the harbour, shipping containers, ships etc. So they designed a cargo ship with waves on the side. Element's "Oil Spill" obstacle, fits in nicely with Hamburg's seafaring heritage and ads an environmental theme to proceedings. Once again, Phil Zwijsen (BEL) skated this one with creative vigor and was justly rewarded with ' 1600 for his efforts.

It'll Get Better Texas; Volcom Is Coming to Town

Right now is not a good time to be a Texan. The Cowboys got spanked on Monday Night football by the New York Giants, and to make things worse lost their starting quarterback, Tony Romo, for a good chunk of the year with a broken collarbone. Oh yeah, and did I mention their record is 1-5.

Now, the San Francisco Giants have a taken two games lead over the Texas Rangers in the World Series, including an embarrassing 9 - 0 beat down in game 2. I didn't even realize until I started writing this that it is manly teams called the Giants that are the problem.

It's funny, because isn't the motto of the state "Everything is Bigger In Texas." Well, maybe that's true...UNLESS YOU'RE A GIANT.

Well have no fear Texas. Your football season may be over, and the Rangers are probably going to loose the World Series, but the Volcom skate team is coming to town. Yes that's right, get ready for the Stone-Age Texas Tour. And what's the best part? It's just a tour. They'll be no contest...so no one is going to loose, which may just be what the state needs right now.

So dust yourselves off Texas, and get ready for David Gravette, Darrell Stanton and Colin Provost to show you some world class skateboarding.

P.S. THE COLORS OF THE VOLCOM STONE-AGE LINE HAVE BEEN BLACK AND ORANGE SINCE IT'S INCEPTION; THEY'RE NOT F*CKING WITH YOU.

Check out the dates and places of the tour below:

freestyle.ch 2010 Qualification - Freeski

From: quattro media

When it's freestyle.ch-time, you're coming - no matter what! Even buckets of rain can't stop you! Heavy rain couldn't keep scores of loyal freestyle.ch fans from finding their way to the Landiwiese on Saturday. Although the bad weather resulted in canceled FMX and skateboarding contests, a skateboarding demo could be held and the snowboarding and freeskiing qualifications were all the more phenomenal. It was the freeskiers who managed foremost to fly in the face of the rain. Their outstanding starting l ineup left no room for anything other than a first-rate contest. Nearly all of the riders paraded double corks - the latest craze in tricks that involves the simultaneous execution of two lateral rotations and spins around the vertical axis. This made for a tough fight to secure one of the first 8 spots in tomorrow's semifinal. In addition to qualification winner, Henrik Harlaut from Norway, Switzerland's up and coming talent Elias Amb hl really dazzled.

Green Label Art: Start To Finish

Skateboarding, art and a chance for the two to become one on a national level. That's what can sum up the Mountain Dew Green Label Art Shop Series, a collaboration between two of skateboarding's finest.

First off, Paul Rodriguez, aka P-Rod, as good of a skateboarder as they get, one of those few guys that does all the major contests, but is still excepted by the "core" crowd. He can be seen from NBC to The Berrics, and everything thing in between. He'll sign autographs for kids who just barley know how to put trucks and wheels on their boards, to guys who are considered pro.

Then throw in the creations by a skate art legend. Don Pendleton is an artist who has been in skateboarding for more than a minute. He's created some of the most distinct deck graphics skateboarding has ever seen. His abstract creations have become simply synonymous with the products of skateboard manufacturing heavy weight, Alien Workshop.

These two have brought the skateboarding world some of the best creativty it has ever seen; from mind blowing lines on a skateboard, to an eye popping graphics on skate decks. And who has brought them together? Think NASCAR. Soft drink giant, Mountain Dew, who has been supporting skateboarding for years with it's Dew Tour, decided it was time to give back to the everyday skateboarder, artist and skate shop.

The Green Label Art Series has been months in the making, and came to a climax last week Las Vegas, NV. It was a competition that challenged skate shops from across the country to create the art for the next Green Label nationally selling Mountain Dew can, which came with a $5,000 cash prize for both the artist and the shop.

But first they needed some inspiration. And that's where P-Rod and Pendleton come in. Mountain Dew cam to P-Rod, a sponsored rider of theirs, with the idea of a signature can. A can that would combine the name he has worked so hard to create with art that pulled at his aesthetics. He came to the conclusion that he wanted Penndelton to design the looks of the can, an artist who's style he has always admired in the skateboard world.

Now on to the theme. P-Rod is a big fan of the philosophy and movies of the late martial arts great, Bruce Lee, which that would be the feel of the can. Now, Pendelton is more of an abstract guy, and took the martial arts theme and morphed it a bit. The can has a dragon-ish feel combined with the unique style Pendleton's name has come to be synonymous with.

The vibe was created, the campaign began and 35 shops in 7 US regions began creating with the dreams of becoming the next nationally selling Mountain Dew can. You had skate shop heavy weights from Huf on the West Coast to KCDC on the East Coast. And you had your lesser know shops all in between battling to become one of the finalists. A feat that came with an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, NV where the Dew Tour Championships would be held. Not-to-mention a chance to become THE SHOP that wins.

The winner would be determined by internet votes. A hands-offs approach that has become expected from Moutain Dew in terms of skateboarding. P-Rod and Pendleton have both stressed that they were never pressured in any way, and the whole feel of the campaign in 100% their's.

A campaign that has flown from Boston, to Portland, to Salt Lake City and finally touched down in Sin City for it's finale. A campaign that has been all over national television in commercial form featuring real street skateboarding in between ads for Panteen, not to mention the art of a highly respected artist, who has always stayed true to himself and his creative style.

It all came down to the Dew Tour Championships. The finalists were there, P-Rod and Pendelton were there and the tension was high. In the end P-Rod, Pendelton and skate legend Chris Pastras announced the winner on Fuel TV. And Guess what? It was a lesser known shop from Tracey CA, Street Science. That's what this whole project was about giving back to skateboarding. A smaller skate shop from a small town in California was given the opportunity to be on TV and have their shop's art on a nationally selling soda can.

And in some inspirational news for all the skate shops that did not enter, or make the finals, Mountain Dew has another skate team rider who goes by the name, Eli Reed. A Boston native turned New York City skate war lord, Eli's style is as smooth as it get at those rough NYC spots, and like most who have steez he supports the arts. Word on the streets is he is very excited to maybe be next year's inspiration for the project, and already has artists, themes and the feel in mind. Look for that because he'll for sure know how to make it legit.

Stay tuned for full interviews with Paul Rodriguez, Don Pendleton and the Street Science crew on what went into the making of this project.

O'Neill Cold Water Classic California 2010 - Jack O'Neill & The History of the Wetsuit

From: quattro media

Jack O'Neill single-handedly revolutionised surfing in the 1950s. Without him surfing in cold water would simply not be possible for any length of time, if it wasn't for his invention of the wetsuit in early 50's. This ingenious garment single-handedly broke down the barriers allowing dedicated surfers to enjoy waves in the planets coldest conditions. Jack O'Neill was in San Francisco at that time, where it gets quite cold and drops down below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. He wanted to work on something so that he could enjoy surfing longer. He got his idea and inspiration by watching elephant seals. He was wondering how they can spend all this time in the water. What is their complex structure that allows them to be in those freezing waters 24/7? One of his first designs was a vest. He figured out that the core of the body lets out a good portion of the body heat. By realizing to keep chest, back and head warm was a key part of all future developments he came up. If it wasn't for Jack O'Neill and his wetsuit, three quarters of the people that surf on the planet wouldn't be in the water!

Tony Hawk, Pro Skater, talks about The Tony Hawk Foundation

From: maxwellflower

Tony Hawk, Pro Skater, talks with http://maxflowertv.com/ about what inspired him to establish his foundation. The Tony Hawk Foundation helps collaborate resources and funding to build skate parks for at-risk youth, inner cities, and lower income areas. Tony’s inspiration began about 10 years ago, when he then realized skateparks were typically only built in wealthy communities, and many of them still lacked substantially in design. Tony’s vision is to bring great skateparks to the people that need them most. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Nike SB Zoom FP Wear Test

Nike SB Zoom FP Wear Test

Shoes and skateboarding. Skateboarding and shoes.

Despite the existence of those grainy-filmed gorilla grippers and the occasional absent-minded long boarder, the connection of skate+shoe is a permanent bond for both mild and wild riders of boards ? so much so that it's looked upon with a collective duh nowadays ? but this wasn?t always the case. Back before things started getting forgotten, we?d just ride what we?d find: basketball shoes, deck shoes, tennis shoes, and sneakers. No one cared. No one thought about it.

(The song of the Beaverton sirens: Nike SB Zoom FP.)

Then came the so-called skate specifics, mainly labled as such because of a signature endorsement by a skate super hero. But most have been tweaked versions of (a) some other jock?s court slappers or (b) some other 50s throwback to play shoes (as opposed to church shoes) that kids wore around the neighborhood.

(Bob delivers.)

Luckily or unluckily (depending on who you ask), today?s offerings literally fill the warehouses, big ships, and boats (and eventually skateshop shelves) of our big-market world, and even the tiniest of know-it-alls claim know the difference between, vulc, cup, and soulless skate footwear. But after all the knowledge, and innovation, and colorways, it?s always the brightest of bright days when you don?t care, you don?t think about the shoes on your feet, and instead you just unconsciously ride your board.

(Boys are back in town. Chet Childress somewhere down by the bridge.)chet

It's hard not to think about it, though, when your friends who work for one of the biggest shoe brands in the world invite you to their hometown to do nothing more than skate in some new shoes they came up with.

You almost want to think, criticize, and analyze the whole thing when you're up there in the land of the Ducks, getting all athletic and shit, pouring rubber into waffle irons and shit, experiencing the best shoes ever made in the history of the world and shit.

(There's a new bowl in the Nike SB penthouse. Chet disasters.)newbowl

As such, Nike SB has another new shoe and it?s no jump off ? at least not a jump from anything you can put your finger on. Although the Zoom FP ($104 USD) does borrow from the simplicity of the past while hinting at the future, you can?t point directly at, say, a Dunk or a Top Sider or some ubiquitous running shoe with the FP and say, ?I see where they got that.?

The shoe has laces, for example, but it?s also a ?toungeless? slip-on sort of affair. The upper is fully synthetic and minimally stitched, but doesn?t appear or feel to be overtly tech. The sole isn?t gummy or plastically or super thin or super fat or obviously one thing or another, but it offers amazing board feel and an unspoken confidence that you aren?t gonna bruise your feet the first time you step on a pebble.

(Pat Smith (targeted here) and Ben Mohr were responsible for the top floor bowl.)patsmith

Future and primitive come together in the Zoom FP to produce this newest of SB new, but ?the story? which NikeSB and the rest of the company like to attach to the launch of anything that they roll out isn?t really there. Instead they appear to have delivered a shoe that isn?t claiming to solve a problem, fill a missing link, couple perfectly with a plaid or a hue, or right a previous wrong. Instead they've come out with a simple skate shoe that is somehow new but not too new, proper but not pretentious?a shoe that you can put on, go skating in, and not care.

What do I think about it?

Nothing.

That?s the point of anything worthwhile ... I think.
