Held every year since 2000 the Bora Bora Liquid Festival (better known to the locals as the IronMana) has taken over the crystal clear waters of Bora Bora, Polynesia's most beautiful island atoll. The week long festival is an all-out celebration of multiple ocean-based disciplines including a 6km swim, a 55km surfski division, a waterman triathlon, SUP and Va'a sprint races, and of coarse the festival's traditional endurance race. On the final day of the festival the best of the best watermen compete in either a 40 km SUP and Lay Down Paddle Race, a 50 km Surf Ski Race, or the 60 km Solo Outrigger Canoe Race.

Dew Tour Slims to 3 Events in 2012
Over the past few months, rumors have percolated that the Dew Tour would be slimming down. Then, on Monday, April 16, those rumors were confirmed as Alli Sports announced that the 2012 Dew Tour would be comprised of three "large-scale, premium, 'grand-slam' style events."In conjunction with a renewed four-year partnership with Mountain Dew, Wade Martin, President & CEO of Alli Sports said, "The action sports landscape has grown and changed dramatically since we launched the Dew Tour in 2005."
Yet Martin's reasoning that the growth of the action sports landscape would lead to a shrinking tour seems counterintuitive. A more accurate conclusion might be that the industry is in fact shrinking during the recent hard economic times. "The multi-stop series format was what the industry wanted and needed then." said Martin. "The Dew Tour changed the industry forever, taking the sports to a whole new level. The new Dew Tour, which will include three major events across beach, city, and mountain venues, represents what the athletes and industry want and need today."
However, the slimmed schedule is drawing mixed reviews from competitors in both the summer and winter sports. Seth Hill, a pro snowboarder who has competed in all of the Winter Dew Tour events for the past two years said, "I loved the three tour stops. If they are only going to do one winter contest, it has to be big, like X Games big, and it's just a bit early in the season for that large of a contest."
Paul Rodriguez, pro skater and Mountain Dew athlete, looks forward to the change and commented, "Bringing the events to venues that have such a strong history in skate will step up the level of competition, and I'm looking forward to seeing it all come together."
It will be interesting to see if the new condensed format will help or hinder the progression of action sports. Less contests means fewer chances for athletes to showcase their talents to the mainstream, which may cause a decline in the number of sponsorships available. However, a smaller competitive schedule gives riders a bit of a reprieve from the overly saturated contest circuit, which may help them to perform better at other events.
Here are the dates for the 2012 Dew Tour Schedule:
Beach: Ocean City, Maryland- August 16-19
City: San Francisco, California- October 18-21
Mountain: Breckenridge, Colorado- December 13-16

Boo Johnson Joins Mountain Dew Skateboarding
Boo Johnson from the little California mountain town of Tehachapi signed a deal to join the Mountain Dew skateboarding team. Johnson joins an impressive roster including Paul Rodriguez, Theotis Beasley, and Keelan Dadd.
To celebrate, the Dew crew put together a short "Welcome to the Team" edit featuring kind words about the skater from his new teammates. The footage features Boo Johnson skating P-Rod's private training facility.
Fortunately, now that Johnson is on the Mountain Dew skate team, we can look forward to seeing him compete at this year's Dew Tour Stops in Ocean City and San Francisco.

Etnies Brings Fresh Soles to LA's Homeless
The event is an annual tradition, which the company has been running for 14 years. Over 34,000 pairs of shoes have been given out over the history Easter event. And this year, with the help of filmmaker Mike Manzoori, Etnies took to the streets, interviewing celebrities and volunteers including Devine Calloway, Andy Bell, and Brian Kachinsky.

Australian Longboarder Ticketed While Skating for a Good Cause
According to news.com in Australia, "Geelong musician Aaron Salta was shocked after a South Australian motorcycle police officer yesterday fined him $108 for riding a 'toy' on a road that has a speed limit greater than 50km/h."
Salta expressed his disappointment, stating, "I'm completely devastated. I've put over $10,000 of my own money into buying a van and all the stuff needed for this trip."
Here's an idea for the Australian police force: instead of accepting his $108 dollars as a traffic fine, donate the money to his cause.

Skateboarder Tom Schaar, 12, makes history with first-ever 1080
News quickly spread via social media and the legendary Tony Hawk, who in 1999 became the first to land a 900, was among those to chime in. "I've seen Shaun White try 1080s & Mitchie Brusco crash-land a few," Hawk Tweeted. "Tom Schaar nailed it."
Schaar, who lives in Malibu, is among only a handful of skaters to have landed a 900. But many believed he lacked the size and strength necessary to achieve enough speed to land a 1080 on the MegaRamp.
The MegaRamp at Woodward West in Tehachapi, Calif., features a 70-foot roll-in ramp that leads to a 50-foot gap and ultimately the quarterpipe ramp. The ramp was customized by Schaar's sponsor, Red Bull, before he began to skate.
He nailed the trick on his fifth try.
"I'm pretty stoked," Schaar said afterward. "I thought it'd take three days of trying it 40 times... I was definitely high enough and I could tell I was spinning fast enough, and right at about 720 I saw the coping and I was 2-3 feet above the coping and I got around that last 360, and I was just amazed."
So were his much older peers.
Said skateboarding icon and MegaRamp specialist Bob Burnquist, via email: "Tom Schaar is a little giant and a spinning machine. Amazing. Look forward to learning a lot from him in the future."

Etnies Brings Fresh Soles to LA's Homeless
The event is an annual tradition, which the company has been running for 14 years. Over 34,000 pairs of shoes have been given out over the history Easter event. And this year, with the help of filmmaker Mike Manzoori, Etnies took to the streets, interviewing celebrities and volunteers including Devine Calloway, Andy Bell, and Brian Kachinsky.

Pro Skateboarders Featured in The Doors New 'L.A. Woman' Music Video
The original band's drummer, John Densmore, and guitarist, Robby Krieger, make cameos as the guys skate past prominent locations that figure into the band's career such as the sidewalks in front of the Hollywood Bowl, the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, and the street artist Gronk's mural of Jim Morrison in Venice.
According to the L.A. Times this is the first time an authorized edit of the song has been released.
Kenny Anderson was so pumped to participate in the remake of the music video that he produced a clip entitled, "Top 5 Things About Being in the Doors 'L.A. Women' Video."

2012 Tampa Pro: Italo Romano's Inspirational Showing
As impressive as Pudwill's ability to land the big tricks all contest long was, an even more impressive display of perseverance came from 23-year-old Brazilian skateboarder Italo Romano. He qualified 19 out of 77, ahead of skateboarding's brightest stars, such as Ryan Scheckler and Manny Santiago, earning himself a spot in the finals.
The accomplishment is perhaps most notable for his ability to compete alongside the world's best without the use of his legs. As a teenager, his legs were amputated after an accident where he tried to balance between train carriages.
Romano shows determination to never allow the loss of his legs to get in the way of his dreams. As he recently stated, "Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it."

Holy Cow: A Skate Trip Through India
One amazing thing about traveling somewhere so foreign is that people don't see a group of skateboarders, and the social assumptions that often go along with that. They are merely in awe of the sport as an incredible athletic display.
