What a great weekend to celebrate World Autism Awareness day on April 2nd. It all started Saturday morning in Lake Forest at the Etnies skatepark where Etnies was hosting an Autism Speaks/ A.Skate Foundation clinic which allows children with autism to be a part of our social world through skateboarding. With the help of many dedicated volunteers including many Etnies team riders and Sole Technology employees, the clinic went off without a hitch and many children walked away smiling after an afternoon of skating. After the event, everyone headed up to Venice Beach for the "1 in 91″ Silent Auction Art Benefit hosted by Upper Class Label and sponsored by Skateboarder Magazine to help raise funds for the A.Skate Foundation to put on more clinics. The turn out was huge and everyone had a great time all the while knowing that all of the money that went towards bidding and winning the artwork would go directly to A.Skate to help further their cause.
Then on Sunday, the good people at Girl Skateboards made it possible for A.Skate and Skateboarder Magazine to hold another clinic at their private skatepark and it was another packed house. From 11 am to 2 pm, the park was packed with kids skating and parents taking pictures. Many pro skaters like Kenny Anderson, James Hardy, Ben Gilley, Chad Bartie and a large chunk of the Blueprint team came out to show support and get their first hands-on experience with helping autistic children learn to skate. It was so great to see so many pro skaters and companies show their support and it was just an amazing weekend and I was proud to be a part of such an inspirational cause. Thanks to Crys Worley, Peter Karvonen, Ashton Maxfield, Don Brown, Rick Howard, Jason Callaway and to everybody who help make this weekend possible. The A.Skate Foundation still needs all the support it can get, so please contact them to find out how you can help.
